Gilford Department of Public Works
The Town of Gilford’s DPW has continually operated from an 11,500 sf, wood framed, two- story administration/ garage building for almost 50 years. The type of building construction, its deterioration from age and the evolving needs of this expanding department demanded improvements. Banwell Architects was retained by the Town to review the existing building, departmental programing needs, and existing site to recommend the best solution to serve the community in the coming decades.
The design team collaborated closely with the Department and the Public Works Building Needs Committee to identify the needs and determine the best course from the design options. This included confirming all the spaces and equipment that would need to be accommodated, considering the feasibility of the existing building’s adaptive re-use or expansion and conceptual design of multiple configurations of a new building.
Seven potential site locations, both on and off campus, were analyzed while considering multiple factors including, cost, traffic, wetlands, grading and logistics. The Town elected to locate their new one story, prefabricated metal building on the site of the existing building. It includes 7,800 sf of administrative and support space and 14,600 sf of garage/ storage. The Town is excited to begin construction in the summer of 2025 with anticipated occupancy spring of 2026.
