Job Shadow Day at Banwell Architects

We recently welcomed a group of 8th grade students to our office for a Job Shadow Day, offering them a glimpse into what a typical day at an architecture firm looks like—and the people behind the work.

Throughout the morning, students rotated between conversations with staff members, learning about the wide range of roles that support our projects. While their career interests varied—they came prepared with thoughtful questions and a clear curiosity about how a professional workplace operates and how teams collaborate.

We also shared several of our current projects, including the redesign of the green roof at their school. Because it’s a space they already know, the project helped ground the discussion and showed how design decisions can directly shape their everyday environment. As part of this exercise, students were invited to contribute their own ideas for reimagining the space. Some sketched out their concepts, while others shared them verbally, resulting in a range of creative and practical suggestions.

To give them a more hands-on experience, students also explored an AI-based 3D modeling program. This activity introduced them to some of the tools we use and offered a glimpse into how technology supports and enhances the design process.

We wrapped up the visit with a roundtable lunch, where students and staff connected more informally—discussing career paths, day-to-day work, and the many directions a design-related career can take.

The day offered a valuable introduction to the workplace, a glimpse into our profession, and insight into the diverse skill sets across our team. We were glad to host the group and share a bit of what we do.
