2014 Efficiency Vermont Award Winners Announced

Banwell Architects has been awarded the 2014 Efficiency Vermont Merit Award for Commercial Major Renovation: Gut Rehab for the work on the Windsor Village Apartments in Windsor, VT. We we’re among 15 entries that were vying to be the Best of the Best in Commercial Building Design & Construction and are honored to have been recognized. It was truly a pleasure to work with the entire design team including Ingram Construction Corporation and Housing Vermont. We look forward to working with you all in the very near future. Project Information:

Banwell completed a design for a major renovation of 77 residential units configured in three buildings located on a 4.48acre site in downtown Windsor, VT.  Olde Windsor Village was constructed in the early 1800s as a state prison.  The building was renovated in the 1980s into apartments.  This renovation included new interior finishes, new furred out exterior walls (on the inside of the existing masonry walls), new plumbing fixtures, new MEP systems, fire alarm upgrades, code upgrades, miscellaneous site upgrades and a new biomass heating facility.

Project Cost: $4,700,000

Energy Efficiency Measures:

  • Reduced oil consumption from 35,000 to 16,000-18,000 gallons a year.
  • Burning 50 tons of renewable wood pellets a year.
  • High-performance envelope with new spray foam, rigid, and cellulose insulation.
  • New energy efficient fiberglass windows.
  • New roof/attic insulation and air sealing throughout.
  • Salvaged and refurbished existing wood flooring in some locations.
  • Introduced Energy Star rated equipment and lights to reduce consumption.
  • New waterproofing and basement insulation.
  • New low VOC paints and finishes.
  • New mechanical systems including low-flow plumbing fixtures.
  • New biomass heating system.
  • Solar hot water collectors.
