Brewster Academy – Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness

In 1988, Brewster Academy hired Banwell Architects to design an award-winning boathouse to support their crew, sailing, and kayaking/canoeing programs. In 2001, the academy called on Banwell Architects again, to upgrade their athletic facilities from a small brick gymnasium to an athletic and wellness center that would consolidate all of their athletic programs into one single facility.

Features of the new facility include:

  • Subtle colors and ribbon windows to minimize the structure’s apparent scale
  • Site design to preserve views of neighboring Lake Winnipesaukee
  • State-of-the-art courts and surfaces to limit injuries and maximize flexibility of spaces
  • Basketball court with “magic carpet” retractable Astro-Turf for conversion to indoor field sports
  • 200m tuned indoor running track with ribbon windows for outdoor views and natural lighting
  • Rowing tank for year-round crew practice

The new oval-shaped building has streamlined athletic programming on the Brewster Academy campus, providing an attractive package of services and accommodations to potential students.
