Sustainable Design

Banwell Architects takes a dynamic approach to sustainability or green design. We recognize the need for responsible, energy efficient designs that optimize use of natural resources and make use of renewable energy sources where appropriate but also respond to our client’s needs: both functional and financial.

We have found the single most effective strategy is to focus on the building envelope, its roof, walls and floor enclosure; maintaining a continuous air barrier, high performance insulation integrated with structural elements and weather resistant claddings, with attention to detail and verified with field testing.

We research best choices in building and finish materials; certified programs for wood products, optimal recycled and recyclable content, and regional sourcing.

With an effective building envelope, energy use is minimized and occupant comfort maximized. From this baseline, choices and options for alternative energy, biomass, thermal solar and photovoltaic are considered for their cost and benefit.
